留学生進学準備の基礎知識─Way of writing statement of purpose─

1:Structure of a statement of purpose

A "Statement of purpose" is a document that summarizes the reasons for applying for admission. The school will judge the student's willingness to enroll, sense of purpose, attitude, and personality base on the statement of purpose. In the interview test, you may often be asked questions from the contents of the statement of purpose, so it is an important document for deciding the evaluation.

It is also the first chance to appeal yourself to the desired school. It is important to express your enthusiasm and motivation in correct Japanese by your own words when answer questions like "Why do you want to enter our school?" "Why did you choose our school?" "What do you want to learn?” etc.

Now, let's check the important points and basic structure when writing the “Statement of purpose".

①About yourself
Introducing yourself, experiences and achievements such as what you have learned and grown up through your study abroad life.
②What you want to learn
About the desire fields and majors, why are you interested in and what kind of thing do you want to learn ?
③About the desire school
After understanding the desired school characteristics, feature, learning program and admission policy, clarify the reason why you chose this school / department.
④School life after enrollment
Imagine what you want to learn and experience after enrollment, what kind of school life you want to live, how you want to grow.
⑤Future dreams
Thinking about the connection between the job you want to get in the future (after graduation) and the desired school, describe how to make the best use of what you learned at the school specifically.

2:Notice of Japanese expression

①Write the expression at the end of the sentence in either「だ・である」or「です・ます」
②Do not use the same expression repeatedly.
When you finish a sentence, you can use the expression 「~と思う」「~と考える」, but don't use the same expression over and over again. If sentences with the same rhythm continue, it becomes monotonous and the sentence becomes unattractive.
Example:

NG:

③Be careful of spoken language, missing word, typographical error, omission.
ClassificationError (Ex)Correct expression
The 1st person自分私(Regardless of gender)
Omission高校高等学校
Words without 「ら」食べれる食べられる
Unnecessary Katakana wordsモノもの/物/者

Title of honor
