In Japanese, the way you count changes depending on what you are counting.

Examples:

• 「本」: Used for counting long objects like pencils or trees (1本 [いっぽん], 2本 [にほん])
• 「杯」: Used for counting items in cups or bowls (1杯 [いっぱい], 2杯 [にはい])

Words like 「本」or「杯」are called counters (助数詞（じょすうし）).
There are many more counters in Japanese.
