Thinking of applying to a Japanese university? You’ll need JLPT N2 or above!

The Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology (MEXT) has announced the basic guidelines for the 2026 university entrance examinations (Reiwa 8). 

One of the key points is that international students are expected to have JLPT N2 level or higher as a guideline for university admission. 

Furthermore, universities are encouraged to actively incorporate the EJU (Examination for Japanese University Admission for International Students) in their admissions process.
