Introduction of the Second-Generation Residence Card
2026/06/16

From June 14, 2026, Japan has begun operating the “Second-Generation Residence Card” (new residence card). This system aims to prevent forgery and promote digitalization, and some residence-related information is now managed within an IC chip.
However, the current first-generation residence cards you already hold can continue to be used as long as they are still valid, and there is no need to replace them immediately. They will be gradually replaced with the new card when you renew your period of stay or change your residence status.
International students do not need to rush to complete any replacement procedures. However, please make sure to regularly check your residence card’s expiration date, and do not forget to report any changes such as address updates or status renewals to your school. It is important to properly manage your residence status on a daily basis.
