About Romanized Japanese (Romaji)

2025/12/19

Do you know about romaji?
Romaji is a way of writing Japanese using the Roman alphabet.

Romaji is used very often in daily life in Japan.
You can see it in station names, train information, maps, addresses, and many other places.
When studying Japanese, people usually focus on hiragana and katakana, but being able to read romaji is also very helpful—especially when going to unfamiliar places or learning new words.
We recommend learning how to read and write romaji as well!

Examples:
うれしい → ureshii
くつした → kutsushita
ふゆ → fuyu
おおさか → osaka / ōsaka
