1.Status of residence

2.Change status of residence

Foreigners residing in Japan can stay in Japan after receving approval for one of 29 different types of residence status.Each residence status allows specific activities within its defined scope.
When international students seek employment in Japan, they need to change their current status of residence “Study abroad” to a work-permissible status such as ” Engineer/ Humanities Specialist/ International Services”.
If they can not find a job before graduation, they can change their residence status from “Study abroad” to “Specific Activities”, allowing them to continue job hunting for one year after graduation.
(This residence status is valid for six months and can be renewed only once, making the maximum duration one year from graduation.)

3.Change status of residence from “Study abroad”

As a general rule, you must go to the nearest regional immigration bureau, branch office, or local office to complete the procedure for changing status of residence “Study abroad” to one that allows employment.
In that case, the documents that must be submitted include the following:

・Passport (Travel certificate)
・Residence card
・Application for change of status of residence
・Resume

②Documents to be obtained from the employing company
・A copy of the employment contract
*The job description (as detailed as possible), employment period, and remuneration amount must be clearly stated.
・A certified copy of the commercial registration of the employing company
・Financial statements (balance sheet, profit and loss statement)
・Company brochure (a pamphlet or similar document detailing the business activities of the employing company)

③Documents to be obtained from the university
・Original graduation certificate (or expected graduation certificate)
For international students residing in Japan with the status of residence “Study abroad”, the required documents vary depending on whether they have graduated from a university or obtained a specialized degree.
